The Semiotic Medley

Abstract:

The Semiotic Medley is a pop-up style community art gallery that will present rotating solo and group exhibitions that focus on conceptual and socially engaged art. The Semiotic Medley will take place over a three month period (May-July 2017). The gallery will include activities, workshops and lectures; members of the community are encouraged to participate and lead discussions. The Semiotic Medley aims to be a place where people can come and engage in conversation in a nonconventional art space. This is an art space that is designed to host group discussions and exhibit artwork.  The solo and group exhibitions will be a carefully chosen blend of artists from the local community and from abroad. This will provide the gallery with artwork and a place for people to gain crafting skills.

Project Summary:

The Semiotic Medley is a pop-up project that will focus on conceptual and socially engaged art. This gallery isn’t style-specific; The Semiotic Medley is a space that is welcome to all disciplines and media. This this project will be a space for artists to host free creative workshops for the community. This project focuses on the local creative talent; Curator: Yeltsin Penado will research local talent and make connections with local galleries to connect with professional artists in the Long Beach Area. This project will take a multi-disciplinary approach towards choosing the group of artists that will be exhibiting their work in the gallery. The artists who exhibit at the gallery will give an artist lecture on their work and provide a workshop relating to their work. This will function like a residency for the artist where they can become very involved with the exhibition and lead multiple workshops or performances if they please. This is a three month project, there will be four exhibiting artists and guest lecturers will be special guests every Friday. The four exhibiting artists will be comprised of two local and two regional artists, they will exhibit their works for three weeks each.

The Semiotic Medley will host classes and workshops throughout the week. This will serve the community as a creative space that you can learn a free skill at. This is a space that should be taken as a learning environment and a philosophical discussion forum. The Semiotic Medley plans to host multiple lectures, workshops, lessons and performances for the community. Workshops and lectures will be free and open to anyone who wishes to engage.

The Semiotic Medley is a gallery that is open to experimental forms of art and new forms of presentation. In an era where the boundaries of art are constantly being pushed, it is important for there to be a site where artists and community members can meet to have a socially engaged creative space. This is a gallery that will open its doors for the sake of an intellectual experience.

A statement on how the project would benefit the specific audience or community:

The Semiotic Medley is a creative space that is open for the community to engage with. This is place that will benefit the artist community, the exhibiting artists and the local community. The local artist community is invited to host workshops or take place in community discussions. This can be useful in sense that if there is any prevailing issue, this space can be the catalyst to change through discussion. The exhibiting artists will be able to use this opportunity to use their skills to share with the community. They will give an artist lecture that will explain some of their work and what skills and merit they demonstrate, they will exhibit their work and have the chance to pass on skills to the community. This is a fantastic opportunity for an artist who is emerging in their career. The local community will now have a space that will be open seven days a week and devoted to the making of art and discussion. This can be very important for Long Beach since there are a few art communities and a few galleries. Currently Long Beach has one creative space that has studios for resident artists, but this space will be a space where an artist can really engage with the community and provide something worth talking about.

How the project will be evaluated:

For this project to be a success, it is vital that the space is utilized for people to really engage with each other. Art and free discussion is the only medium in which this project can properly be done. This is a three month project because a time scale really makes puts deadlines and properly presents time for an event to exist, this can make this project mobile or it can take place in multiple places at once.

Project Schedule:

The project will take place throughout a three month period from May to July. Thought this period the gallery will be open every day and there will be a workshop/class/discussion/activity taking place every single day. Some people may engage but there will be major shows every Friday. The Friday line-up is stated below and will include professional artists that will share their skills with the community.
