Function Space

Abstract (150): Function Space is a pop-up style community gallery that will present rotating solo and group exhibitions. Function Space will span a three month period that will include activities, workshops and lectures. The solo and group exhibitors will be chosen from the local community and from abroad, they will give artist lectures on their work. Activates will include free yoga classes, sound healing, and meditation sessions. There will be workshops on self-publishing, urban gardening and alternative art making. Function Space welcomes experimental forms of art and pedagogical practice; this space will provide a public outlet for artists to experiment with a professional exhibition space.
Project Summary(750): Function Space is a pop-up exhibition project that is focuses on the creative talent around the community. Curated by Yeltsin Penado will research the local talent of Long Beach and bring in a multi-disciplinary group of artists that will have the opportunity to showcase their work and provide artist lectures on their work. This project will span a three month period including multiple lectures, workshops, lessons and performances. Workshops and lectures will happen on weekends and the gallery will be open during the week for free activities like performance, yoga, dance, and meditation at specific times.   Function Space is a gallery that specializes in experimental forms of art and alternative forms of presentation; this is a space for conceptual art, socially engaged art and education. This project will happen in a pop-up business space in Long Beach, CA. Long Beach is a city that is very diverse and has a lot of cultural history, and this is also a location that has an arts district with no gallery that specializes in this form of art presentation. This project would benefit the community in many ways. A pop-up business space is ideal because it has walls for displaying art, floor space for social projects and a back room for storage and supplies. This project is here to embrace the local community, so it would be in a location that is inviting and easily accessible.

Bradley Albee: Professional flow artist, flow teacher. Will teach beginner and advanced participants to craft their own flow art tools and learn some basic/advanced moves.

Eric Dingo: Professional sound healer.

Leonard Shaw: Educator and Publisher, well versed in philosophy.
