ORTA Bilingual Tour
Phoenix - Zhikan - Kaidi
Our group decided to do a twist on the ORTA exhibit. With Zhikan and Kaidi being international students we decided to do a tour in another language beside English. We created a skit that where Phoenix was the tour guide and was showing Zhikan's friend Kaidi around the exhibit. Phoenix would describe the different pieces from the ORTA exhibit in English and Zhikan would translate to Kaidi in Mandarin who at times would ask questions back in Mandarin to Zhikan who would have to translate to English for Phoenix to be able to respond. The thought process behind this whole presentation is that maybe in the future tours at the gallery would have ways to communicate exhibits that are being shown to those who's native language isn't English.

Proposal
Phoenix, Zhikan, Kaidi
Maybe do the show in Mandarin and we can act like we are giving a tour to a international student. Kind of like how would we explain the exhibition to someone who speaks another language.
Refined version:
We are planing to record next week during class at the tour of the show. We are going to discuss within our group what we thought and discuss about what we see at the show. To tie it in further into the Orta Banquet, we are going to interview 2-4 people during the exhibition between 11-11:30. After, we are planning to edit it together so it flows, and have it available online to hear.

FM Broadcast proposal: We thought doing the broadcast in multiple languages would be cool for the banquet. It would encourage their idea of conversations between different people from different areas. Another idea was interviewing people who have viewed the work, and seeing what their thoughts were on the overall theme of the exhibition.
NEW: Number stations, unknown in broadcast orgin or meaning are in their own way a form of language only known to a select few. We will create our own number station that will be exculsive in meaning to members of the Otis community. Determined by the referrence numbers assigned by the Orta's to each of their pieces, our number station is an audiable translation of their sculptures. True to traditional number stations, our station will play on multiple loops, at random reason and various times during the week of the Orta's visit. It will be up to the listeners to solve the code of the numbers and encourage discussions with one another.

Lunch Proposal
WE WOULD LIKE TO RECORD THE SOUND OF PEOPLE EATING AND DRINKING. WE WISH TO DO THIS DISCREETLY, WE WILL SIMPLY SIT NEXT TO DIFFERENT PEOPLE WHILE THEY EAT AND RECORD THEIR ENTIRE MEAL.
In order to fulfill the assignment, we used the opportunity of the visiting artist lecture series to record and broadcast Lucy and Jorge Orta's lecture. The lecture was broadcast in three locations: cafeteria, library and the Ben Maltz gallery...so patrons of the gallery could listen the lecture while viewing the Orta's exhibition.

Proposal:
We thought it would be fun to have the three of us walk around with recorders and record noise at the lunch. Converstation, noise of dishes, people walking, ect. Just record everything! Once we all collected some sounds, we thought we could edit all of our sounds together to make a song or soundscape of the event. Once we have the recording is made, we can upload it onto either this classes site or somewhere on the Otis website and make it availble for download. That way people have a little memory of the event. It'll be a cool take away for people who came to the event.
