Skill Building / Research Phase:
Week One Aug. 29:
Intro to course, Ospace website, and the history of Radio. Demo digital audio recorders.
Complete Project 1: Recorded Interviews, and upload to Ospace along with profile picture and answers to questions on student profile page.
Homework: Begin Project 2: Radio Show Review – listen to and record show; write review and post to OSpace.
Sept. 5 Labor Day Holiday – No Class
Week Two Sept. 12:
Demo audio editing software. Work in class on Project 2: Radio Show Review
Homework: Complete Assignment on OSpace (Songs I Love / Songs I Hate). Continue working on Project 2.
Extra Credit: Participate in the IL National Beach Cleanup Day/Bike Ride and create an audio report of the event.
Week Three Sept. 19:
Work in class on Project 2.
Homework: Complete Project 2 and upload to OSpace.
Week Four Sept. 26:
Listen to and critique Project 2.
Contact Mic demo. Begin Project 3: Sound Art / Abstract Sound.
Homework: Record sounds with contact mics.
Week Five Oct. 3:(meet @ KXLU 3:30)
KXLU tour. Practice DJ’ing & reading announcements on-air.
Homework: Complete Assignment on OSpace (Radio News Coverage Comparison).
Week Six Oct. 10:
Listen to abstract sounds. Work in class on editing Project 3.
Homework: Complete Project 3.
Week Seven Oct. 17:
Critique Project 3. Listen to Story Corps, This American Life, Art talk, RadioLab, etc… Begin Project 4: Community News Story
Homework: Complete live reports from the Great Shake out! and post to OSpace.
Complete Part A of Project 4. Begin parts B & C.
Extra Credit: DJ at the IL Fairs (with Mark) Tues, Wed, Thurs. @ 11-12. Come prepared with 1/2 hour of music on iPod or USB drive.
Week Eight Oct. 24:
Listen to and critique the Great Shake Out! reports & Work on Project 4 (parts B-D).
Homework: Complete Project 4 and post to OSpace
Final Project Phase: (@ Otis or KXLU – TBD each week)

Listen to and critique Project 4. Brainstorm final projects.
Homework: Meet in groups to flesh-out Final Project ideas. Post proposals on OSapce.

Homework: Make any necessary revisions to final projects and presentations and post on OSpace. Compile documentation of final projects on CD/DVD (if applicable)

Present final project / presentation / performance to KXLU staff at Otis, or KXLU (class decides). All documentation of projects due on course website (and on CD/DVD if applicable). Complete course evaluations and peer reviews.
