Research / Skill Building Phase:
Week One Aug. 30: (With Mentor)
Intro to course. Review OSpace website. Listen to Radio examples. Demo digital audio recorders. Begin Project 1; Portraits/Self Portraits. Listen to part A of Project 1. Post profile picture to OSpace Student page and answer questions.
Homework: Record Part B for Project 1. Complete Assignments 1 & 2 on Ospace (Songs I Love / Songs I Hate & Radio Show Examples).
Monday, Sept. 6 Labor Day – No class
Week Two Sept. 13: (With Mentor)
Demo audio editing software. Work in class on Part C of Project 1.
Homework: Complete Project 1 and upload to OSpace.
Week Three Sept. 20: (With Mentor)
Listen to and critique Project 1 and Assignment 1 & 2.
Homework: Listen to KXLU as much as possible.
Week Four Sept. 27:
Visit KXLU studios. Meet at 3:30. Listen to PSA’s.
Complete Assignment 4: KXLU PSA’s. Begin Project 2: Community News Story.
Homework: Complete Assignment 3 on OSpace (Otis + KXLU = RADIO visuals).
Complete Part A of Project 2, schedule interviews for Part B.
Week Five Oct. 4: (With Mentor)
Review Otis + KXLU = RADIO visuals. Listen to Story Corps, This American Life, etc. Work in class on Project 2.
Homework: Complete Project 2 and post on OSpace.
Week Six Oct. 11:
Listen to and critique Project 2. Listen to Art Talk and Art Scene Visual Radio.
Begin Project 3: Art Reviews
Homework: Complete Part A of Project 3. Begin parts B & C.
Extra Credit: attend Ira Glass’ talk at USC and blog about it on OSpace.
Week Seven Oct. 18:
Work in class on Project 3.
Homework: Complete Project 3 and post to OSpace
Extra Credit: DJ at the IL Fairs (with Mark) Wed. 10/20 @ 11-12, Thurs. 10/21 @ 11-12. Come prepared with 1/2 hour of music on iPod or USB drive.
Week Eight Oct. 25:
Visit KXLU? Listen to and critique Project 3. Listen to Sound Art examples.
Homework: Meet in groups and brainstorm Final Project ideas
Week Nine Nov. 1: (With Mentor)
Lecture and Contact Mic demo with visiting artist/designer, Jeremy Quinn.
Begin Project 4: Sound Art / Abstract Sound.
Homework: Complete Project 4 and post to OSpace (in some cases this will be documentation).
Final Project Phase:
Week Ten Nov. 8:
Listen to and critique Project 4. Begin Final Projects.
Homework: Work on final projects.
Week Eleven Nov. 15: (With Mentor)
Visit KXLU. Work on Final Projects.
Homework: Post final project proposals to OSpace and continue working
Week Twelve Nov. 22:
Guest Speaker, Garth Trinidad, KCRW DJ & Otis Alumnus. Work in class on Final Projects.
Homework: work on final projects
Extra credit: visit Garth Trinidad’s show at KCRW and blog about it on OSpace.
Week Thirteen Nov. 29: (With Mentor)
Work in class on final projects.
Homework: Complete final projects.
Week Fourteen Dec. 6: (With Mentor)
Rehearse final project / presentation / performance with visiting Otis community.
Homework: Make any necessary revisions to final projects and presentations and post on OSpace. (Possibly also compile documentation of final projects on CD/DVD, if applicable.)
Week Fifteen Dec. 13:
Present final project / presentation / performance to KXLU staff
Turn in documentation of all projects on CD/DVD and on course website. Debrief presentations given to KXLU. Complete course evaluations and peer reviews.
