The Raising of Lazarus

Gouache, graphite pencil and pastel on paper, panel, and nobang (Korean transparent-colored silk)

40 x 16 "

2012

One of mixed media works completed during my inner ear illness,"Miniere Disease." During the first 2 years, I struggled with the complete loss of mobility, battled with physical, mental, financial and spiritual challenges. With a limited mobility and vision, I began to work again in 2011. In this piece, I mirrored myself on this figure rising up from water, "the life",  as I visioned myself in full recovery physically, mentally, and spiritually.

3D Models of Self-Portrait

In 2015, "Life sees itself 15-01, "Life sees itself 15-02," "Life sees itself 15-03" have been developed with the two pastel drawings from my artist residency in Assisi, Italy during 2015 summer.

In 2016, more self-portraits have been created with this 3D model.

They are "Self-portrait;Life sees itself 16-01" and "Self-portrait;Life sees itself 16-02."

Two pastel drawings are “A Flower Offering to Santa Chiara in Assisi” and “A Flower Offering to San Francesco in Assisi.” They have been used for texture on my 3D bust. These two drawings can be found in the above "Works from 2013 - present."

2016

One of the 3D self-portraits, "Life sees itself 15-01," has been incorporated into "Self-portrait as Earth; Life sees itself 16-01." This work is my voice speaking that I am Earth and we are Earth. Only when I/we can extend myself/ourselves to Earth including all living beings and non-living elements on Earth, I/we can respect, cherish, protect and restore Earth, during this critical time of global warming and sustainability. Today's climate change and natural crisis have proclaimed that we are all interconnected.

On 11-2-2016, after a few months of contemplation on this work, I've decided to modify the title. The new title is "I am the earth; We are the earth; Life sees itself 16-01."

Drawing from life challenges me to the state where my mind and body do nothing but seeing, breathing, and drawing. Drawing is an act as equally demanding as seeing. Drawing, it is still  one of the most difficult challenges I have today.

Photography

I learn to see everyday. Photographing what I see and how I see the world around me is an immediate way to capture a transient moment, an effective way to communicate with others, and a way to keep a note of my daily journey to myself.

Please go to "I am learning to see everyday" page for more photography works.
